CATCHY: Luke Draper and Dillion Glover enjoy the sport the local Bassin Tournament provides and their love of landing a fish has put them high up in the junior NSW Bassin Tournaments.

IT takes patience and determination to be a good Bass fisherman and two local young competitors in the New South Wales Bassin Tournaments have got the knack for it.

Dillion Glover is running second in the juniors and Luke Draper is fourth and chasing those above at every chance he gets.

At ages 14 and 11, respectively, the two are eager fisherman and Dillion has even managed to get his father involved in the sport.

What appeals to them about the sport is the friendly nature of the competition and the sportsmanship that all competitors have.

“We are always able to go up to someone after a session and chat with them about what bait or rod they used,” Dillion said.

Some of the fisherman they are chasing are also Singleton locals and with a locality such as Lake St Clair so close, the boys know how lucky they are to be on the water in as little as 15 minutes after hooking up the boat.

It is the thrill of the catch that has both boys hooked.

“It is the landing you get after sitting there for five hours waiting for a Bass to come and hit the bait,” Dillion explained.

The events held by the NSW Bassin Tournaments attract competitors from as far north as Queensland and as far south as Victoria and bring them all to Lake St Clair and Lake Glenbawn at least eight times a year.

The catch and release tournaments see competitors fish in three, five hour sessions across two days. It’s a dedication only real Bass fisherman can understand.

The experiences for Dillion and Luke are unforgettable moments and when they get the chance to catch up with pro fisherman Col Jocumsen, the time on the dam makes it all worth while.

“The pros are great and we can always approach them and have even been taken for a spin in their boat,” Luke said.

According to Luke the skill and techniques that make a good Bass fisherman lies in the confidence you have in the bait.

“You also have to know how to read the fish finders and learn to judge where the schools are,” he said.

Both Dillion and Luke also compete with their fathers in the team events and on occasion have tried to get other family members involved.

“If they don’t get a bite or land a fish pretty quickly, they get bored and want to head back into shore, they don’t have the drive like we do to stick it out,” Luke said.

We have just been informed by Marie and Singleton Council that you must pre book your camping site prior to fishing all comps at St Clair.

If you don’t pre book you will (according to Marie) be turned away. I just hope that some of our competitors that come down from Moree or even worse, Queensland get to read this post.

Please ensure that you pre book your site to avoid any disappointment.

Dreamfish is pleased to announce the introduction of its latest product, the Eagle Spin.

Using the key production principles that have made our Buzzmasters so successful on a variety of species, the Eagle Spins are built tough to take what ever punishment you and the fish dish out to them.

The twin arms of the Eagle Spins fold in flat for ease of transport, and quickly spring out when required. Eagle Spins currently come in Grand Wizard (Black Head with Purple/Black skirt) and Bleeding Bait (Black Head with Red/Black skirt) in 1/8oz, 1/4oz and 3/8oz and in typical Dreamfish style, we’ll do custom orders if required (Just email Rod: sales at dreamfish.com.au).

With its twin blade design, the Eagle Spin is fantastic in dirty or muddy water, where the blades send out an inviting vibrating pulse that brings the fish in.

Fish them around submerged timber, weedbeds, dropoffs and anywhere else you’ll find fish, and we expect you’ll be sold on Dreamfish Eagle Spins.

So what species will Eagle Spins work on? Its limited to your imagination, but so far Aussie natives especially Bass, have taken a real shine to them.

Please go to Webstore to place your order.

Prior to this years Bassin Big Bucks which will commence on the 10th October at Lake Glenbawn there will be a prefish ban of 2 weeks before the event. Those of you that fish ABT events should be familiar with this as they have prefish bans before all of their events. A prefish ban means no fishing and no boating by competitors on that dam during this time. Those that are caught on the dam will not be allowed to compete. The ban will start at 6pm on Sunday the 27th September and will go right through to 6pm on the 9th October, and yes the Friday just before the event is also included in the ban.

Bassin feels that this will make the competition much more competitive especially for those of you that are not local and also make for better fishing as the Bass won’t get stung on the Friday.

The Big Bucks is a 3 session skins event with some great cash up for grabs. The cash is divided up and given away at each session to the top 3 placed teams. So every session anglers all start on an equal playing field. Teams have 3 chances to win over 2 days.
There will also be a “Big Bass” cash Prize along with lots of sponsor’s giveaways. There will also be the chance for Teams to “Option Up” if they want to back themselves and win more cash.

Registration forms can be downloaded or submitted online through our Registrations page.
Hope to see you there.

blue-acresThe Blue Acres / Lamiglas Bassin series will be holding our R4 event on the 1st & 2nd August at Lake Glenbawn. So after a big break of around 10 weeks everyone should be pretty keen.

This round will see a change in the makeup of our prize pool. Bassin will still be paying down to 10th position for the top teams but instead of our standard prize packs we will be introducing cash as well. $3300.00 in cash as well as prize packs will be up for grabs for those of you lucky enough to make the top 10. This is based on 60 teams so if we get more entering we can pay further down the line. Please don’t forget that we still purchase a lot of our prizes and with the help from our sponsors there will be around $ 7000.00 in cash and prizes at this event. We feel that these changes will give our sponsors much better exposure along with offsetting some of the high costs associated with fishing tournaments these days, but still maintain the social feel that we are trying to achieve at ouLake-Glenbawn-kioskr events.

There will still be the top 3 Junior awards / The Big Bass / Encouragement and Lucky draws as there always has been, along with the trip to Fiji that can be won by simply entering each event. This prize will be drawn at our last round. But you must be at our last event on the 14th November to claim the trip.

If catering is required for Glenbawn please give Sandra a call on 65438355 to organise your meals.
Hope to see you all soon.

Dave “Kiwi” Trinder took out last weekend’s ABT Bass electric at Lostock Dam.

Lostock being a fishery with a hard reputation the 22 strong field weighed in only 4 fish with  Dave catching 2 of those.

Kiwi decided to look for warmer water as the average temp of the dam was around 14C so he headed up into a bay that was a couple of degrease warmer. “Always thinking old Kiwi”. 5 casts later using Evergreen blades he had 4.13 kg in his livewell and upgrading a 42cm bass as well. Upgrading a 42cm, you have to be joking!!!!  Just goes to show that the Big Bass are there in Lostosk, but only when they decide to come out and play.

Dave actually broke the record for a 2 fish limit in a tournament at Lostock that was held by Mick Pascoe, and also got the big Bass for the weekend of 2.31kg

Great effort for a bloke from the top of the North Island.  Next tournament we might even see him do the traditional Haka before battle.

Hunter Native Fish was formed in 1981 and was originally known as Bass Newcastle. They are a branch of Native Fish Australia and their core
objective is the conservation of Australian Bass. Hunter Native started holding Basscatch events in Dec 1989 to gather important data for fisheries relating to catch rates and the size and health of the Bass in the Williams river. Hunter Native have caught and released 12,180 bass and returned 1837 catch cards and fished for 8782 angler hours. We are involved in the Tide to Table program with NSW DPI which has included projects to restore riparian vegetation and saltmarsh areas on Kooragang Island , install rock fillets on the Wallamba river to re-establish mangrove areas and saltmarsh. Hunter Native have been involved in stocking Lostock dam with almost 10,000 bass over the past 2 years and this year have applied to stock Glenbawn , StClair and Lostock with help from NSW Bassin and ABT. This year they have worked in conjuntion with the Council of Freshwater anglers to lobby Hunter water to provide first class recreational facilities and ongoing
stocking and access to the proposed Tillegra dam. Hunter Native hope that in the future this will become as well known as Glenbawn and St Clair for Big Bass. A well managed stocked impoundment fishery takes pressure of the wild fishstocks.

After speaking with Marie from Lake St Clair we thought it best to let everyone know who will be competing at our events this year the camping rates that you can expect to be charged when you attend.

As there are no particular allocated camp sites at Lake St Clair you are charged per tent. Your tent is your site.
The rates are $ 16.00 per night per tent which can include up to 2 adults and 2 children. You will also be charged an additional once off $ 7.00 for your boat. Powered sites are also available at $ 22.00 per night.

As you enter the park there will be a motor home on the left of the entrance where you can see Marie and pay your fees for the weekend. If you arrive late that night you can catch up with her the next morning. Also if your partner is arriving later on that night and they are staying in your tent you have to let her know his or her name on your arrival and that person won’t be charged any extra.

So if there are 2 people staying in 1 tent on an unpowered site with a boat over 2 nights that will be $39.00.
Hope this helps.

Our 2009 Blue Acres Lamiglas series is about to commence. This year we will be holding 6 Bass team’s events with the first round kicking off on the 7th March and our first money event the “Bassin Big Bucks” which will be held in October.
The format will be pretty much the same as last year with the top 10 ten teams from each event receiving some great prize packs along with some great gear for the kids. There will also be the usual Lucky Draw prizes and encouragement awards.

Throughout the year your Team’s points from each event will accumulate and the Champion team at the end of the year will win the all expenses paid guided fishing trip. Last year our winners were Team Loomis’s Mick Pascoe and Joel Norman who are heading up to Weipa in April to fish with Allan (Fish) Philliskirk from Weipa Fly Fish. The boys will be doing some great Barra and pelagic fishing.

The Bassin Big Bucks event if you decide to fish this one will be a skins format type event where prize money will be offered up after each session. There will be the usual three sessions throughout the weekend with the cash divided up over those sessions.  So say for example, if we get 40 teams, there will be over $10,000 in cash to be won, more teams more cash. As an extra incentive for some more cash, anglers who would like to back themselves also have the opportunity to “Option Up” if they wish. This extra money will be set a side and will be handed over to the leading optioned up anglers after each session. Every session you will get to start fresh again so you have 3 chances to win the cash. Also if you have been lucky enough to get a sponsor for this event, your sponsor will receive a special section allocated on our web site outlining their business and their services.  The Big Bucks event will not be included as a Bassin series round, it is a separate event.

We have also made some slight changes to our format and point score system this year. Your teams total point score for 2009 will be calculated from your best four results from the six events. So if your team can’t attend an event you won’t be disadvantaged that much. Fish all six rounds though and you will have more chances to accumulate a better result. These changes have come about by feedback from anglers that have competed throughout last year. Remember that these events are here for you guys so any suggestions that will benefit the series will always be considered.

Anyway hope to see you at some of our events this year.

NSW Bassin Tournaments would like to welcome on board, Blue Acres Lamiglas as our major sponsor for 2009.

Blue Acres Lamiglas were great supporters in 2008, especially being our first year and not as yet having any runs on the board, Steve and Ian jumped in without any hesitation. At every event last year 2 Lamiglas Certified Pro rods were awarded to the champion team along with a rod from their Competitor range for Champion Junior angler.

Steve McDonald from Blue Acres said the response that their company received by supporting the Bassin Tournament Series last year was fantastic and wanted to continue the partnership along with increasing their involvement this year.

Blue Acres Lamiglas fishing rods are designed by Blue Acres for Aussie anglers and the fish species we target. These rods are built by the world – renowned specialty rod building company, Lamiglas.

Thanks again guys great to have you on board again.

WITH the Great Inland Fishing Festival approaching, Inverell angler Gary Lamrock has already set the standard with a rare catch at Copeton Dam.

“I was fishing in a one lure competition on the weekend when I caught what I thought was a big Yellowbelly or a good size Murray Cod,’’ Gary said.
“My fishing friend Dave Allan and I where gob smacked when we realised it was a cracking big 50 cm Australian Bass.

Garry travelled to Somerset Dam in May to try and catch a Bass like this and all he caught was a Yellowbelly.

“I go out to Copeton chasing Yellowbelly and catch a Bass – go figure, maybe it’s climate change.
“One thing is for sure it should make things interesting for the Inland Fishing Festival this year.’’

The 2009 ABT Megabucks has been run and won. This skins format was held over 2 days and 3 sessions last Monday and Tuesday at Lake Glenbawn.

Teams have a 4 fish limit each session with cash going to the winning teams. After each session you start all over again with your last round wiped clean.

So for every session you have a chance to win some great cash. Also teams have the chance to option up at the start of the competion where teams can add more money to the price pool by paying additional money per team. This money goes into a cash pool for those that have “Optioned Up” to play for .

A good number of our very own NSW Bassin anglers competed in this years event with a good few of the guys winning some big cash payments and some great prizes. As far as Pro Tournaments go this event attract’s some of the very best tournament anglers in Australia, so to be competitive in this field is a great acheivement.

Well done guys.

What a great weekend!!

The Skeeter owner’s tournament was held at Lake Glenbawn last weekend with 25 teams competing.

The event is organized by Josh Batterson of Skeeter Boats Australia every year on the 3rd weekend in September for all Skeeter owners. It is a teams, shared weight event and runs over 2 days with anglers fishing a 7hr session on the Saturday and a 6 Hr session on the Sunday.

Skeeter owners are allowed to invite a friend along for the weekend and yes I do have friends. Mick Elsley invited me along to fish as the Elsley team, probably because of my great “fishing ability” or was it my great company; anyway we had a great time, and catching some Bass as well.  The weekend was fully catered with plenty of food and refreshments supplied by Josh. There were also lots of prizes on offer. There was a yellow duck hunt where a prize was attached to each duck. There were secret weight prizes. There were Jackall packs, Lucky craft packs, MinnKota  chargers, Megabass, Flueger , Bing Lee, Shimano, Loomis, Lowrance , Evinrude, Pure Fishing etc, etc. You name it all the big names were on board for this one. The meals were again supplied by Sandra, Dennis, and the girls from the Lake Glenbawn Kiosk, and we all know how they can look after us.

Craig Simmons and Adam Ward took out the event with a total of 6 fish in a pretty well shut down bite. The fish are there they just have lock jaw at the moment. During their presentation speech Simmo and Wardy didn’t give too much away, (Megabucks coming up) only saying that they kept their lures down deep due to the fact that the water was very clear.

Anyway a great weekend Josh, hope to be there again next year.

Guys and Girls,

Our round 5 event will be held at Lake St Clair on the 27 – 28th September.

Briefing will be at 7.30pm Friday up at the BBQ area. We will be there from 5.30 for registrations and to check all teams in.

There will be a quick run down on the rules and regulations along with session times for the weekend etc.

Over the last few weeks St Clair has received a good influx of water and looks fantastic.

This time last year when we held our first practice event there we had 37 teams competing, and some great fish caught, with Peter Phelps landing a 2.62kg monster on surface.

For this event we currently have 62 teams and hopefully with the days and the water warming up the fishing should be just as good with the bass becoming more active. Some good Bass have been landed there over the past couple of weeks.

Looking forward to seeing you all there and hope the weather stays kind.

With 3 rounds to go, who do you think will take out champion team for 2008 and win the trip to Weipa.
We have 1 round left at Lake St Clair and 2 at Lake Glenbawn.

1st place we have Team Loomis. Mick and Joel have been very consistent through out this year but tend to struggle at St Clair (Sorry boys it’s the truth). Put them at Glenbawn though and watch them perform. Mick would be one of the best exponents of deep fly bass fishing that I have ever seen and has also won over $12,000 in prize money fishing ABT tournaments over the past few years.

2nd place currently is Team Extreme, the boys from Windsor, Greg Beattie and Allen Cleary. These guys are a couple of well seasoned tournament anglers both in bass and bream. They are very thorough with the way they approach each event doing lots of homework before they compete and usually have some type of game plan prior to even leaving home.

3rd place we have North West Fishing Tackle 1, Robert and Daniel from Tamworth. These two blokes are very quiet achievers. They were unknowns at the start of the year and have snuck up on the rest of the field. But everyone knows them now. They don’t say too much, don’t give too much away, but boy can they fish.

4th place we have teams 2 teams. Team Bass About, Ben and Ron Pepperall. These guys are locals to our 2 major dams Glenbawn and St Clair and know them both very well. Probably the most consistent anglers when it comes to extracting deep schooled bass. Ben’s an expert in the art of targeting single fish on the sounder and slow rolling plastics up through the depths to usually get his limit, which sounds a lot easier than it really is.
Also in 4th place are The Squirrels Bros. Ron and Neil are quiet often mistaken for father and son but their not, they are bro’s. Probably because Ronny looks a lot older than he really is. These guys love their surface fishing, with Neil being one of the most patient fishermen that I have ever seen throwing a popper around for surface feeding fish. Neil also took out ABT’s Borumba round this year in Queensland bringing home the $3000.00 cheque. But don’t ask them where or how they are catching them, they won’t tell you.

5th place we have Team Savage. What can I say about these two? Robo and Jade are the most unlikely partners that you would ever expect to fish together. They are both the biggest stirrers, “BS artist” that we have competing. They are both very competitive with each other and always arguing. But in saying that they are both great guys. Ask them who is the best angler and both will poke themselves in the chest. How they are sitting in 5th place is beyond me though, maybe the use of their Lamiglas sponsored rods are getting them over the line.

Who do you think is going to take the competition out? Will it be out of these 6 teams?

Due to recent rain, water levels in the dam are rising, this is creating more country for bass and more food being produced, which means more bait balls are seen whilst out fishing.  Due to warmer days, there have been more bugs and moths appearing after dark.  Since water temperature is rising, there might be a surface action start up in the mornings and afternoons.

We have been catching fish on Slider Pro Blue 3″ with 1/4 ounce jigheads.  In schools, dad, my brother and I have been using a variety of lures – one of them being Jackall Blades.  The technique we’ve been using with the Jackall Blades is just letting them sink to the bottom, then slowly rolling them off the bottom.

Catch you on the water
Ryan Jones.

2008 Junior Rankings
Here are the current 2008 junior rankings after round 4.

Reid Tierney is holding onto first place at the moment with Alex Fowler snapping at his heals in 2nd.

With the Juniors, the boys and girls weigh their biggest fish for each session. A total of 3 Bass recorded over the weekend if everything goes to plan.

The overall results at the end of the year will be decided by your best 5 rounds.

Point System is as follows:       100 points for 1st / 95 for 2nd / 90 for 3rd etc.

If you don’t catch a fish over the weekend you will be penalized an additional 5 points.

So if you guys don’t fair so well in a couple of rounds, or you can’t make it to some events you can drop those rounds. We do understand that it can be hard for you to attend all events throughout the year.

Remember Your Best 5 Rounds Count!!!

This Guy needs a boater for our round 6 event at Lake Glenbawn

Young Reid Tierney is without a boater for round 6.

This  young  fella is a fantastic angler and he knows Lake Glenbawn extremely well, so you definitely won’t be held back with this guy as your partner.  Reid doesn’t want to miss a round, so if anyone is looking for somebody to fish with for this event, or can help out in anyway please let me know. We would like to get him a start.

Thanks Bruce

Local Weather reports have been added to Bassin.com.au brought to you by

Written on August 20th, 2008 & filed under News

Champion team for 2008 will be heading up to Weipa on the 25th April next year for some spectacular Barra mania. Champion team will be flown up to Weipa , to fish with “Fish” and his gun guides

The prize includes airfares, accommodation, meals and 4 very full days on the water with the boys. We even have our own chef (Gordon Ramsay?) to keep our tummies full. Fish said that April could be a bit iffy with the weather, but if the guys don’t mind getting a bit wet at times it will be the best time to chase the Barra. We should be at the peak of the runoff.

Anyway guys, there is still a good few of you still in the running with 3 rounds still to go, so good luck. Champion team will be announced at the last round on the 6th & 7th of December.

This sexy 385 Quintrex Explorer will be our lucky draw prize for 2008. To qualify anglers would have had to have competed in at least 4 events during the 2008 series. The boat will be drawn at our last round event at Lake Glenbawn on the 6th and 7th of December, and the winning angler must be present. Maybe one year there will be a Stratos or a Skeeter up for grabs, but at the moment a tinny it is.
