WITH the Great Inland Fishing Festival approaching, Inverell angler Gary Lamrock has already set the standard with a rare catch at Copeton Dam.
“I was fishing in a one lure competition on the weekend when I caught what I thought was a big Yellowbelly or a good size Murray Cod,’’ Gary said.
“My fishing friend Dave Allan and I where gob smacked when we realised it was a cracking big 50 cm Australian Bass.
Garry travelled to Somerset Dam in May to try and catch a Bass like this and all he caught was a Yellowbelly.
“I go out to Copeton chasing Yellowbelly and catch a Bass – go figure, maybe it’s climate change.
“One thing is for sure it should make things interesting for the Inland Fishing Festival this year.’’
63 Teams converged on Lake Glenbawn to compete in our round 6 event. Most teams got amongst the fish with a total of 400 Bass caught with an average weight of .729kg which is up on past events.
Most of the Bass were taking Jackalls and spinnerbaits cast to the edges with plenty of stories of hard running Bass not getting back to the boat. Surface was an option also, but only in the first session, with the fish not playing the game with surface in the last.
Team Savage’s, Craig Robertson and Jade Cornish scored their second win at Lake Glenbawn for this year by casting Rattling Brown Dog Jackalls to the edges and fishing the same section of bank all weekend. With very tight drags on their Lamiglas crankbait rods the boys secured victory with a full limit of 12 Bass. “You had to go hard on the Bass early due to the fact there was lots of timber just under the surface, which did result in some pulled hooks” Jade said. Well done guys.
2nd place we had Team Smico, John Picton and Dylan Smith also with a full limit of Bass, 12 fish for 9.050kg. This is only the second event the boys have entered, having a 32nd placing last round to a 2nd this time around. Look out next round guys these boys are brimming with confidence.
3rd place we have the ever consistent and current competition overall leaders, Team Loomis.Mick Pascoe and Joel Norman. Mick and Joel fished mainly up around the Big House Bay area, also catching their full limit of 12 fish for 8.690kg.
It was great to see the patience everybody showed during the start of the second session with the start location being moved to the bay near the new boat ramp area. The conditions of the dam had become pretty treacherous but the enclosed waters of the bay allowed for a reasonable start. A number of teams didn’t feel comfortable about going out at the start of the second session but headed out a bit later on in the afternoon when things settled down a bit.
This weekend we had 17 juniors competing, with two junior only teams venturing out on their own which was great to see. Team Nitro, Darren Reardon and Christopher Reggars from Nabiac and Team Bassooka , Kallin Cameron and Jyh Heming from Belmont. What a great bunch of young blokes. It was great to see these guys out mixing it with the big guns.
Big Bass went to Brad Turner from Team Nomads on a Jackall and Champion female angler went to Cass Boyce from Team El Vulpes.
Hope to see you all at our next and last round for this year at Lake Glenbawn on the 6th-7th December .
Kim Bain becomes the first-ever woman to qualify for the Bassmaster Classic.
Kim is one of Australia’s top female anglers. As Kim said in this interview there is no reason why Ladys should feel that they are disavantaged while fishing against the guys. The fish don’t know who is casting the lure out there. This is one girl that does her talking out on the water. Go Aussie.
